Before Astym Therapy, My Life Revolved Around Pain

I had to plan my entire day with rest breaks after everything I did. I felt like I spent more time resting than I did getting anything done. It was making me depressed because I have 4 very active boys who always want me to join in the fun!

Since discovering astym therapy I am able to attend all my kids baseball games and soccer games, cheer in the stands and instead of laying down afterwords, we go for ice cream!

I was skeptical at first because I have tried many other forms of treatment but now I am grateful for not giving up and finding astym therapy.

Leg Pain: one Astym therapy visit and my pain is gone.

My cancer surgery left me with nerve damage in my leg. It felt like a rubber band had been placed around my upper thigh cutting off circulation. One visit to my Astym provider (a physical therapist) and my pain is gone. Try this please! It is a painful experience but at least when it is finished you can be pain free.

My success story – Astym therapy relieved my neck and shoulder pain

My left shoulder/neck had been hurting since January 2017 after carrying around a backpack vacuum around for six months. I had a myleogram done and that didn’t find anything wrong with me so then I had a steroid injection which didn’t help the pain. I had a MRI of my neck and then another of my shoulder and they both came out fine so I was referred to a pain management doctor who suggested I go to physical therapy and have astym therapy done. After 9 visits. Twice a week for four weeks I can say that I have very little pain.

Astym therapy took away my pain after falling

I have an artificial hip and when I fall on it I get a severe muscle bruise and I cannot walk.  Astym therapy eases the pain and relaxes the muscle to a point where I can put pressure on my leg and use my walker and get on my feet and walk.

Astym Therapy For A Year Resulted in Whole Body Rejuvenation

By:  Mary Rachford, PT

After reading that title, someone that is familiar with this amazing regenerative treatment may think that the person undergoing this therapy may have had a severe injury or lives with chronic pain.  Surprisingly, neither is the case.  The fortunate individual to receive once a week sessions of Astym (A-Stim) therapy for an entire year is my massage therapist, Fran.

Fran did originally have a mild shoulder injury that was addressed with a few sessions of physical therapy, including Astym treatment and exercises.  While receiving one of her last treatments, Fran inquired if the treatment could be performed on the entire body at one time.  I responded that indeed it could, it would just take close to an hour and probably would not be that enjoyable.  Fran said that she would be very interested in having it done as a maintenance therapy, as well as, possibly preventing future injuries from surfacing.  Her twenty years in the massage industry was taking its toll and she was very proactive versus reactive in the care of her health.  I was excited to get started as the researcher in me was very curious to see how someone would feel after have this treatment done for preventive measures after a prolonged period.

So, what is Astym therapy you ask?  It is a treatment that regenerates soft tissue, like muscles and tendons.  It removes unwanted scar tissue or unhealthy restricted tissue that may be causing pain and lead to more serious conditions down the road.  I have been successfully using Astym therapy for over 15 years and have seen it work on the most severe cases even after other therapies have failed.  One patient that I treated several years ago had a failed total knee replacement which led her to use a walker for five years.  After receiving Astym therapy, she shocked her doctor when she switched to a cane after 2 months of treatments and her pain was significantly reduced.  Another recent success story was from a woman who had been to 4 PT’s and spent 6 months receiving massages twice a week, only to have her symptoms spread to both of her legs.  Finally, after only 12 Astym treatments her symptoms were 85% resolved and she can now sit for the first time in years without pain.

We have countless patients that have responded favorably to  Astym therapy for many different conditions.  Here are just a few of conditions that respond well to Astym thearpy:

*Plantar fasciitis
*Lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow)
*Post operative scar tissue
*Achilles tendinitis
*Frozen shoulder
*Rotator Cuff tendinitis
*Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
*Sprains and strains countless

“Astym therapy’s ability to resolve soft tissue problems is remarkable, and it routinely works even when other interventions fail.  We often hear about patients suffering for years and trying multiple treatments without success, and then finally finding relief with Astym therapy.”  said Thomas Sevier, MD, the Medical Director for Astym therapy.

One of the reasons Astym therapy  is so successful even where other treatments fail, is that it was scientifically designed to address the underlying cause of the soft tissue problem rather than trying to just take away the pain.    The body’s soft tissues degenerate when inadequate healing occurs. Degeneration can be caused by many factors, including age, intense use, improper movement, weakened muscles putting extra stress on other tissues and disease.   Once degeneration occurs, those tissues are then weak and prone to injury.  Most chronic tendinopathies are primarily degenerative in nature.  The good news is that Astym therapy works both to regenerate soft tissues and eliminate or reduce internal scar tissue.  By eliminating the cause of the problems, the symptoms resolve. I asked Fran how Astym therapy compared to the weekly massages she receives, and she said that the Astym therapy definitely goes deeper, is more therapeutic and feels like a medical intervention versus a relaxing massage.  She would not want to give up either one, as they both have benefits.  She feels more of a tingling sensation after the Astym process, and she thinks it has prevented some minor tissue issues from becoming major problems, such as a pain in her arch was addressed the same week it started, as was an Achilles tendon issue, an unhealthy biceps tendon and most recently a tendon in her thumb began acting up due to the numerous clients she works on.  For Fran, the sessions are usually first thing Monday morning which gears her up for the week.  I now could see how this would be extremely beneficial for the many people that sit all day at computers, or have jobs that require constant repetitive motions or even athletes looking to get the competitive edge or stay in the game longer.   After seeing the benefits that this has had on Fran, I am now interested in experiencing the fantastic benefits of this cutting edge regenerative technique.  If only, I could do it on myself!

Chronic Plantar Fasciitis – nothing would work until I found Astym therapy

I suffered with plantar fasciitis pain daily for 11 1/2 years.  At times it was extremely painful.  In the beginning, I had a baby learning to crawl, and I was crawling right along with her.  I bought a chair to sit on in the shower.  Over the years, I purchased dozens of orthotics (some custom), night boots, received physical therapy, ultrasound, e-stim, and other various treatments and medications.  I found some orthotics that helped but I still had pain every day.  Until my podiatrist referred me to the PT who used Astym therapy.  I have been nearly pain-free for over a year!  I sincerely never thought I would never be rid of plantar fasciitis.  I can’t tell you how grateful I am.

Astym therapy key for marathon training

Astym therapy has been a key factor in my recovery for high volume marathon training. Each session seems to open up more levels of flexibility; and a quicker recharge between runs. Mona put so much of her own passion for therapy into each treatment- making each appointment something very special. What a relief!

Treating Tennis Injuries and Tendinopathy: Advice From an Expert

By:  Lisa Chase, PT, OMPT

Tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis and rotator cuff tendinopathy are common injuries that can plague a tennis player. The last thing an athlete wants to hear is, “You must rest and stop playing tennis.”  Soft tissue injuries can be painful, limiting conditions that are slow to heal, which is particularly challenging to a tennis player who wants to get back in the game.

Many athletes seek advice from primary care and sports medicine physicians when they have tendon pain and then are often offered anti-inflammatories, injections, and told to rest.  Typically, this common regimen only offers temporary relief and may not be the best method to heal a tendinopathy. Astym therapy targets the underlying cause of many soft tissue problems, rather than just trying to relieve symptoms.  It is unmatched in its ability to resolve tendinopathies, and often works even after other approaches fail.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TENDINOPATHY, TENDINITIS AND TENDINOSIS?

The word “tendinopathy” actually means “disease of a tendon,” and is a broader term for two conditions known as “tendinosis,” or degenerative tendinopathy, and “tendinitis,” or acute, inflammatory tendinopathy. Although “tendonitis” is used often, most cases of tendinopathy are not associated with significant inflammation and thus don’t respond well to anti-inflammatory medications.

WHAT CAUSES TENDINOPATHY?

Tendinopathy can be caused by overuse or improper loading of the muscle-tendon unit. It can also be caused by degeneration of soft tissues due to injury, age or other reasons. Repetitive strain on a tendon may cause tiny tears that accumulate over time. These tears may result in pain and can eventually change the structure of the tendon resulting in acute inflammation and/or degeneration that can lead to pain, tissue adhesions, movement impairment and eventually loss of function.

HOW PHYSICAL THERAPISTS HELP HEAL TENDINOPATHY

ADDRESS THE CAUSE

  • Astym therapy addresses the underlying cause of tendinopathy and other soft tissue problems by engaging the body to regenerate healthy soft tissues (muscles, tendons, etc.), and eliminating unwanted scar tissue that may be causing pain or movement restrictions.
  • Correct poor footwear
  • Assess or change equipment, for example choosing a racquet with a larger sweet spot will help reduce load on the arm.
  • Correct stroke mechanics, for example bending knees at least 10 degrees during the service motion will lessen the load on the shoulders and elbows.
  • Identify proper training loads and recovery to avoid overuse injuries.
  • Incorporate proper warm-up or cool-down for tennis.
  • Develop a balanced training program for tennis to include stretching, strengthening, speed, core stability, agility, balance and coordination.

WHY ASTYM THERAPY IS SO SUCCESSFUL

Astym therapy, evidenced to engage the regenerative mechanisms of the body and promote the healing of soft tissues, has repeatedly been shown safe and effective in controlled clinical trials, clinical study, and large population outcomes data.  A new approach to soft tissue treatment, Astym therapy resulted from a large, groundbreaking research endeavor supported by major hospitals and universities.  It is used in settings ranging from therapy clinics to hospitals to industrial rehabilitation to elite/professional athletics, and has been proven to be more effective than other available treatments.

Astym-certification is advanced training and not everyone is qualified to perform this higher level of care.  In order to become Astym-certified, a clinician must undergo intensive training and testing.  Doctors often prescribe Astym therapy for their patients because it is safe, high quality care that has been proven to be effective.  To find or confirm a clinician is certified in Astym therapy, visit the Find a Provider section of the Astym therapy website.
