I broke the fifth metatarsal in my right foot, 15 years ago while working at my job. The environment required that we wear steel toe boots. I am 5’2 and was assisting a co-worker put merchandise in the overhead compartments. I was told that the movements I performed to hand boxes up with my height, caused the bone to break.
After the cast was removed, I continued to have multiple problems.
I was unable to drive, work, dance, or walk without intense pain. All the little things in life became unbearable.
I tried regular physical therapy but here was little or no change with my foot. My orthopedic doctor gave up on me and said there was nothing else he could do or recommend.
I am a person who does not take narcotics well, they make me sleep, masking the problem and not a solution.
In August, a friend asked if the doctor ever recommended ASTYM for therapy. I had never heard of the procedure and immediately looked it up.
I read everything I could get my hand on and decided to give it a try.
I called Heartland Rehab and was scheduled for an appointment the very next week. Nicole was amazing.
I arrived for the appointment and met Meryl Willingmyre and my life will never be the same.
She was always on time, encouraging, and uplifting. She explained the process and we began.
The first week was the greatest challenge but I knew this would be the answer I was looking for.
If we had know how dramatic the end results would have been, we both agreed it should have been recorded.
After suffering for 15years with pain that never stopped – this treatment was a miracle.
Thank you Meryl!

I injured my acl in March 2016 and had to do physical therapy before having surgery and my therapist tried astym treatment after a few weeks and it made such a huge difference because I was able to walk much better after each time. After my surgery we waited a few weeks and my knee was very tight and once my dr cleared it then we were able to start astym treatment again and have done it a few times now and it has helped my pain and ability to bend my leg more.

My name is Emma de Groot, and I am a professional golfer on the LPGA and LPGA Symetra Tour. I have suffered from chronic back pain since an almost career ending car accident in 2011. Since I began working with Back2Normal, my function and movement has continually improved, however there has always been some restriction in my rotation. After three months playing non stop golf, and countless travel hours in Australia at the beginning of the year, I came back to Florida with extreme restriction in movement. Since being away, Lisa had become certified in the Astym method and got to work on me straight away. Within two treatments, I had my full range of motion back in my thoracic spine, as well as my hips and ankles, no pain whatsoever, and a far improved golf swing.

The recent peer-reviewed research on Astym therapy improving function and range of motion in breast cancer survivors is getting a lot of attention. Claire Davies, PT, PhD CLT-LANA, the lead researcher and main author, has been invited to present at Annual World Cancer Congress taking place next month. This research demonstrates the impressive effectiveness of Astym therapy methods and protocols in breast cancer survivors.
The Astym therapy methods and protocols are evidence based and scientifically developed. Medical research consistently demonstrates the safety and effectiveness of Astym therapy methods, and also shows how Astym therapy is key in successful treatment following breast cancer treatment.
Only Astym-certified clinicians offer this therapy, and they are all listed in the Find A Provider directory the astym website. In order to become certified in Astym therapy, clinicians undergo intensive training and testing.
I was training for my 2nd full marathon and doing quite well. So well that if I was able to finish at my goal and paces that I’d been training at, I would qualify for Boston. One week before the race, I started it have pretty severe pain in my lower left leg. Was it shin splints? Knots in my calves? I tried to continue to run on it but to no avail. It was diagnosed as a stress fracture and I was unable to run the race. In fact, I was on crutches for 6 weeks.
The recovery was very slow. My doctor recommended Astym therapy. I had never heard of it and wondered if it was some kind of hocky treatment. I did some reading and decided it might actually be legit so I made an appointment with my PT to try it.
Amazing results!!! Via about 8 Astym treatments, she was able to work out the knots in my calf muscles. We made some gait and shoe changes and slowly I was able to begin running again!
I didn’t realize how much I had missed running until I was able to get back out there. I was alive again!
I’m now training for a half marathon and I feel GREAT! I literally tell all my running friends about Astym therapy when ever they are experiencing muscle issues as I truly believe it will benefit them!

I had surgery on my left knee in October 2015. I had to have physical therapy and then I was introduced to Astym therapy. The first time it helped with the swelling but it was painful. After a few days it did feel better.
During physical therapy my progress with my mobility was developing slowly. I believe having Astym treatment helped my swelling go down, which improved my mobility.
Astym treatment helped my progress during my physical therapy treatments and I would recommend it to future patients.

A note from the Astym program: Clinical study has shown Astym therapy to be very helpful when used post-surgically. A large study was just published in the Journal of Knee Surgery, and it showed that patients suffering from persistent knee stiffness following surgery had significant improvement from Astym therapy.
I was in a high speed, head on collision. I got lucky and only suffered from a shattered heel bone and a few superficial back fractures. When it came time for me to be 75% weight bearing, i was unable to put hardly any weight on my leg and was in a lot of pain. My PT used astym therapy and by the end of the day I was able to put weight on the leg and my pain had dropped dramatically. By the next day my leg felt so good, I felt as if I could walk without my crutches. Every time my injury has taken a turn for the worse, she has used astym therapy and I am 100% better by the next day. The process itself is painful but it has been a miracle worker for my injuries and my ability to be back at work! Ginger was a life saver!

I took a tumble down our stairs during a moment of dizziness, which is something I deal with on a daily basis. As I was falling, I grabbed for the spokes in the railing on both sides. My arms got stuck as gravity pulled! Both elbows and my right shoulder were in pain. I ignored it for a month, hoping they would heal. No go! Whenever I lifted something like a jug of water or opened a jar, searing pain would penetrate my elbows. Thank goodness for my PT! After the first few Astym treatments on my left elbow, I found immediate relief from the distinctively sharp pain when in use. I can grip things now with little to no pain. My right elbow is also responding to the treatment, needing a bit more TLC. Astym therapy has been a wonderful relief!

On Sept 28th I was headed to work and got bucked off my horse. I ended up breaking my fibula and tearing every ligament in my knee. I went in for urgent and went for PT. I have been having my treatments with Laura for a while now and can bend my knee to 130 degrees now. I go in Jan 27 to have my ACL and PCL grafted in and then begin therapy again! I am ahead of the schedule thanks to Laura and her Astym treatments!

My story begins with a bilateral mastectomy in April 2014. I elected to start my breast reconstruction the same day as my mastectomy and everything went well for about six weeks. I then developed an infection and had to have one of my expanders removed and replaced and then a week later both expanders had to be removed due to infection. I had another surgery in connection with reconstruction in January of this year. Needless to say following four surgeries, scar tissue was a problem. Before my January surgery my plastic surgeon sent to me to have Astym therapy to soften the scar tissue for that surgery. And it helped immensely. Since that time I have again been referred for Astym therapy to prepare for my next surgical step in my reconstructive journey. I have had approximately 10 treatments so far and it’s incredible what a difference in how soft and pliable the tissue has become. I am so pleased with my results so far and expect even more improvement.
