Post ACL surgery

I tore my ACL while playing soccer in college. This injury is hard and long but at my physical therapy place back home they started doing this treatment on me and it helped so much. This helped get back my movement and extension and help me from being so tight. I’m glad my PT place offered this to make my recovery faster.

Massive Rotator Cuff Tear

I had a massive rotator cuff tear and underwent Superior Capsular Reconstruction. After the surgery I was experiencing severe pain caused by scar tissue build up and this was impeding my recovery. My therapist recommended using the Astym treatment. The treatment was initially very painful and caused bruising in the treatment area. However, after a few sessions my pain had been greatly diminished. I stuck with the Astym treatment and now my pain is nearly gone.

Astym Therapy Works for Me!

I have had 4 foot surgeries in the past 5 years. I had 2 Achilles tendon surgeries and 2 bunionectomies. I had never heard of Astym therapy until then. After the surgeries I couldn’t move my feet at all. I never thought I would be able to go up or downstairs again. I had regular physical therapy but it just wasn’t working so that’s when they decided to do Astym therapy. I couldn’t believe the difference it made and how fast it was. I didn’t understand why she had me put on shorts since it was my foot that was being treated. When she started running the instrument down my leg I could honestly hear the scar tissue breaking up. It was unbelievable!!! I didn’t realize that i could build up scar tissue all the way up my leg when it was my foot that had the actual scar. Anyway, after 4 To 6 weeks of Astym treatments I was walking and even going up and down stairs like I did before I had the surgery. The same thing went for my big toes after the bunionectomies. I couldn’t move my big toe at all. It wouldn’t bend up or down until I had the Astym treatments. Now, I have movement and you can’t even see the scar. I tell everyone that asks me about my surgeries that I wouldn’t be like I am now had it not been for the Astym treatments. My husband who doesn’t believe in physical threrapy is now a believer. He saw how bad my feet were after the surgeries and how they are now. I go to the gym and walk my neighborhood like I never had surgery at all. And, I owe it all to my surgeon, physical therapist and Astym!!! Thank you for giving me my life back.

ACL recovery – Astym therapy made a huge difference

I injured my acl in March 2016 and had to do physical therapy before having surgery and my therapist tried astym treatment after a few weeks and it made such a huge difference because I was able to walk much better after each time. After my surgery we waited a few weeks and my knee was very tight and once my dr cleared it then we were able to start astym treatment again and have done it a few times now and it has helped my pain and ability to bend my leg more.

Astym® Therapy Presenting at 2016 Annual World Cancer Congress

The recent peer-reviewed research on Astym therapy improving function and range of motion in breast cancer survivors is getting a lot of attention.  Claire Davies, PT, PhD CLT-LANA, the lead researcher and main author, has been invited to present at Annual World Cancer Congress taking place next month. This research demonstrates the impressive effectiveness of Astym therapy methods and protocols in breast cancer survivors.

The Astym therapy methods and protocols are evidence based and scientifically developed.  Medical research consistently demonstrates the safety and effectiveness of Astym therapy methods, and also shows how Astym therapy is key in successful treatment following breast cancer treatment.

Only Astym-certified clinicians offer this therapy, and they are all listed in the Find A Provider directory the astym website.  In order to become certified in Astym therapy, clinicians undergo intensive training  and testing.

Bunionectomy left me with pain; Astym therapy fixed me

I had a bunionectomy in September of 2015. I went through 2 months of traditional physical therapy and was still in quite a bit of pain, but felt the therapy was no longer helping and thought that was just the healing process and it needed more time. Three months later my foot still hurt every time it hit the ground, I had a lot of swelling and stiffness and when I noticed I’d lost over half my range of motion in my big toe, I called my podiatrist. She wrote it off to “osteoarthritis”. I felt I didn’t want to live my life with the condition my foot was in and believed it could improve. I chose a different therapy place this time and went to Team Rehabilitation. I didn’t realize how lucky I got, they were one of the few places in the area that practices Astym therapy.  Within about two weeks, I noticed a huge improvement in my foot and toe, my pain level went from a 7 to a 3. I’m continuing therapy, I still have slight swelling and stiffness, but am so glad I asked my podiatrist for a second referral to physical therapy and chose Team Rehabilitation. Without Astym therapy, I’m sure I would have spent the rest of my life in unnecessary pain and discomfort.

Astym therapy helped me after knee surgery

I had surgery on my left knee in October 2015. I had to have physical therapy and then I was introduced to Astym therapy. The first time it helped with the swelling but it was painful. After a few days it did feel better.

During physical therapy my progress with my mobility was developing slowly. I believe having Astym treatment helped my swelling go down, which improved my mobility.

Astym treatment helped my progress during my physical therapy treatments and I would recommend it to future patients.

A note from the Astym program:  Clinical study has shown Astym therapy to be very helpful when used post-surgically. A large study was just published in the Journal of Knee Surgery, and it showed that patients suffering from persistent knee stiffness following surgery had significant improvement from Astym therapy.

Look Before You Leap – I shattered my heel but Astym therapy is giving me a fast recovery

It all began when I decided to take a short-cut to soccer practice and ended when I shattered my heel. Wearing soccer cleats with very little padding, I hopped a fence but didn’t notice it was on a retaining wall. I dropped 9 feet onto pavement, stuck the landing, and immediately knew that something was wrong. It turns out I had shattered my right heel into 200+ pieces. That saying “look before you leap” actually makes sense now.

The surgery put me back together using a plate secured to my heel with 8 pins. After the surgery, the doctor recalled “it was like someone had dropped an egg and I had to put it back together.” At this point, he informed me that my surgery was a success but my journey to recovery had just begun. Now the hard part…physical therapy.

It started with an evaluation and a determination that 14 weeks of inactivity had resulted in an extremely limited range of motion and a large amount of atrophy. I progressed well under the guidance of Audra Jahn at CORE Orthopaedic Medical Center in Encinitas, CA. With traditional therapy I was learning to walk again and began to regain strength in my arch, ankle, calf, and hip. However, after 36 sessions (2 per week) my progress had plateaued.

Still in considerable pain, this pain was limiting my movement and more importantly slowing my recovery. After consulting with my surgeon, he determined that scar tissue was causing a majority of the pain. The staff at CORE then suggested astym therapy as a solution to my problem. Having never heard of astym I was naturally a skeptic but that all changed the moment therapy began.

After the very first session with Pam Cloud I noticed an immediate improvement in my range of motion and experienced a little less pain. By the end of my third session, areas of my foot and ankle were no longer experiencing any pain whatsoever. Other areas had the pain reduced by 50%. I was surprised at how quickly I was seeing the positive results.

I’m currently continuing astym therapy in order to achieve a full recovery. While the treatments were initially bothersome, I have experienced less discomfort over time with each session. Exercising has become considerably easier and my limp had started to disappear as I retrain myself to now walk without pain.

I can’t recommend this therapy enough to people and wish I had only begun it sooner. My progress to full recovery is now on the fast track thanks to astym, Pam’s knowledgeable guidance, and her expert treatment.

Arms Over My Head: Astym therapy changed my life by restoring my movement after breast cancer treatment

I am a survivor of breast cancer. I had a bilateral mastectomy in August of 2013 followed by a year of chemo and 4 more surgeries to the chest finishing in December 2014. I developed chemo induced neuropathy and began falling from balance issues. This sent me to the Neurologist who sent me to physical therapy. After 2 months of work on the balance issues with success we turned our focus on the limited use of my upper body. I was working and trying but didn’t see very much progress when my PT mentioned to me that she was going to a training for a treatment called Astym therapy and that she wanted to try it on me when she got back. At this point, I can’t lift my arms parallel to my shoulders so I am willing to try anything. After the first treatment, and it hurt enough that ugly words came out of my mouth I felt more loose but really didn’t know what it had accomplished, they had me try to do a plank and I could only get about 1/2 inch off the table and had to keep my knees down on the table just to do that. I was so wore out from my workout that I could not change back into my work clothes. 3 days later I realized that I had just randomly raised my hands above my head-jumping jack style-and I got excited, really excited. I had not done that in a year & 1/2. 2nd treatment-didn’t hurt as badly and we added stomach to Astym treatment because of the lypo that had been done for reconstruct filler. The work out afterward went much better, then it was plank time…I was able to do a FULL plank, no knees down and fully off the table! WHAT? I just finished my 4th treatment, I feel better than I have in almost 2 years, I can lift and stretch and do many things that just 3 weeks ago were not even in my thoughts as being obtainable for months. I cannot tell you how much this treatment has changed my outlook and progress. I am so excited that there is a possibility that I can now swim this summer. I have 4 more treatments and even though I want to punch the PT (don’t judge;) sometimes because it hurts, I have realized no pain no gain really is true! It is over quickly and if I can go through chemo then I can handle a little Astym pain! My treatments times varied between 4-7 days in between because of my scheduling issues. I want to spread the word, shout it from the treetops and hopefully help someone else find a simple solution in this not so simple disease to find their strength and mobility again.
