Statin Use and Tendinopathy: What You Should Know

If you treat musculoskeletal conditions, you should be aware that tendinopathy may occur in those taking medications known as statins.

Statins are one of the most widely prescribed medications in the world and are often prescribed for people with high cholesterol to lower their total cholesterol and reduce their risk of a heart attack or stroke. Most people taking statins will take them for long periods, perhaps the rest of their lives, unless they can reduce cholesterol levels through diet, exercise, weight loss and/or nutritional supplements.

Previous studies have questioned the relationship between statin use and the development of tendinopathy, however results had not been conclusive.  Recently, some powerful new evidence has emerged.

A large, nationwide population-based cohort study suggests that statin use regardless of the statin type was associated with a greater risk of tendinopathy compared with that of nonusers.

Types of tendinopathy identified in this study include: (1) trigger finger, (2) radial styloid tenosynovitis, (3) elbow epicondylitis, (4) rotator cuff tendinopathy, and (5) Achilles tendinitis.

If you believe someone may be suffering from tendinopathy induced by statins, refer them back to their prescribing physician for evaluation; this could include possibly screening for drug interactions, modification of their medication type/dosage, or other management.

As far as the tendinopathy itself, there is only one real solution:  Astym therapy.  FOTO results show Astym therapy is, by far, the most effective treatment, and for good reason.  Astym therapy is the only scientifically developed treatment protocol in therapy.
